BUILDING PERMIT TROUBLE

Tlie rnatter of a bach iu Kaimanawa Street, built on a section on which there was already a dwelling, -was again before the Borough Council at *v ^ p pn forjpop r dl ed by ;he Council that ihe bach must be vacated by the end of June, after a report to the Couucil had indicated that a building permit for a garage had heen issued, but not for a bach. Following a request for an extension of time, the Council in July granted perinission for the use of the huilding by the present tenants only up to the end of August. The tenants, members of the Taupo School staff, in a letter to the Council, dated September 13, stated that they understood that the owner of the bach had heen asked to evic'fc them. In view of the publicity given to shortage of teachers' housing and in view of the unquestionable suitability of their present position, they asked that the Council consider the possibility of allowing them to stay until ihe end of the year. Other places that they had looked at had all been unsuitable as per conditions, or distance from school, or rental. Cr Yedder pointed out that notice had been given to the owner, and if the Council let it go they might as well wipe out their by-laws. Cr Morris said that the Council had recently turned down an application for a huilding permit for a second dwelling on one section. and here there wero still two on the one section. Cr Currie stated that the Council had not asked the owner to evict and the present approach by the tenants was wrong. The Council could not deal with the tenants, but must insist that the owner carried out the by-laws as instructed. Cr Yedder moved that the owner be given notice that the tenants must vacate the huilding immediately. The motion was seconded by Cr Currie and carried without dissent.
