NEW WAIRAKEI VILLAGE?

At a meeting of the Taupo County Advisory Committee on Monday night, October 3, it was decided to support the Borough Council in its opposition to any extensive development of permanent housing at Wairakei. The County authorities cannot see the necessity for any large scale housing so close to Taupo. The fear was expressed that, if a large village eventuated at Wairakei, the development of Taupo into worthwhile centre for the County's surrounding farming areas would be seriou&ly retarded. The County's attention was first drawn to the possible housing development at Wairakei as a result of information supplied by the Ministry of Works for the County's district scheme under the Town and Country ITanning Act. In the opinion of the County's planning consultant, Mr A. L. Gabites, any proposal to bnild a substantial number of permanent houses at Wairakei would be contrary to many accepted p.rinciples of town and country planning. He considers that any such move would be basically unsound.
