Prices In Taupo

Sir, — Regardless the consumers price index citing Rotorua as being the dearest place in New Zealand, as far as food-prices are concemed, I consider pride of place should be awarded to Taupo. Evidently the Government Statistician has never heard of Taupo ? We do things. properly here with no fiddling with prices or costs. I know nothing on sale at Rotorua dearer than Taupo. Foodstuffs, fuel, clothing etc. Where in New Zealand is 3/- per lb asked for fish, 1/4 per lb for new potatoes, 1/- per lb for apples? 12/6 for a bag of coke? Where is 9d asked for a split loaf? Or 4d per unit demanded for electricity? What town in N.Z. can claim a better record for rate increases than Taupo? Sir, I object to being told that Rotorua is a more costly place in which to reside than Taupo. Rotorua with its superior selection, frequent saies, large chain-stores, simply cannot qualify for high prices. Taupo quite clearly must lead. I am, etc.
