MAJOR ADDITIONS TO TAUPO P.O.
Major additions and alterations to the Taupo Post Office now being made bv the Post Office Construction Unit, in charge of Mr S. Ankins, will add about 1700 square feet to the existing aocommodation.
The building is being extended 14 feet beyond the present south wall, so that the present postmaster's room will become part of the public office. a new postmaster's ro'om being provided in the new portion. In the extra space thus secured in the public office there will be two enclosed ledger counters with grilles. A passageway from Tongariro j Street will lead between the new building, and the building housing the battery room and carrier equipment for the Auckland-Wellington lines, to the new .Telephone Exchange behind. In the peak holiday periods those wishing to make toll calls will do so from the Telephone Exchange, where there will be call boxes, and not as at present from the call boxes in the main public office. This procedure will obviate congestion in the office at busy periods. In connection with the new Exchange there will be an equipment room for the Exchange, a lunch-room for the staff, and staff retiring rooms and conveniences. The alterations will provide needed additional space for the mail-room. The private box lobby has also been extended and an additional 120 boxes installed. The constructional work is expected to be completed before Christmas, but the actual transfer of the Telephone Exchange may not be completed until a little later.
