GOLF NOTES
For the second qualifying round of the Taupo Golf Club's championships on Saturday, August 13, heavy conunuous rain added to the men s troubles. G. Barlow, with a second round of 83, headed the qualifiers with a total of 163, closely followed by A. Graham, 83, 81—164, and S. Smith, 85, 80 — 165. Others ^to qualify were G. Foote 168, II. Fearn 169, K. Rameka 172, L. Cheal "177, K. Young 185. In the junior grade G. Thomas, 86, 91 — 177, just headed G. Sutherland, S6, 92 — 178, for top place. Other ecores were L. Smith 190, J. Barber 191, J. Woodwanl 191, F. Sherning 192, G. Fraser 201, T. Price 201. C grade seores were : W. Kilmister 198, R. Bjorngaard 201, A. Dance 207, F. McKean 216, G. Potts 217, §. Columb 221. On Thursday, August 18, the ladies played an L.G.U. medal round.. Best seores were Mrs Mdsaac 104 — 32, 72; Mrs Colbeck, 90—13, 77; Mrs Nelson, 105—25, 80. The final of the Rotorua Ladies' Golf Club open junior championship on the same day was won by Miss J. McKelvie, Manawatu, a country member of the Taupo club. Three junior Taupo players who played at Rotorua ret.urned with prizes, Mrs M. Fearn winning the Oonsolation Rose Bowl, Mrs N. Watson the first flight, and Mrs M. Bennett the second flight. African Fourball A novel event, an African fourball, was played on .Saturday, August 20. The novel ty is in the method of scoring, the net seores of partners being multiplied for each hole. Seores ranged from 49 to four for a hole, the winners being G. Sutherland anc T. Price with a total of 354, 20 points ahead of D. Logan and S. Columb, 374. The four points hole went to the credit of the runners-up, when Columb, in receipt of a stroke, holed his second shot at the four bogey fifth hole for a net one, while his partner scored an orthodox four.
Patron's Trophy The popular mixed fourball match play contest for the patron's trophy attracted a good field when the first round was played a few weeks ago. Semi-finals have now been played and some very close finishes have been seen in most matches. Results follow : First round : G. Foote and Mrs Foote beat W. T. Irvine and Mrs Irvine ; L. Smith and Mrs Watson beat A. Graham and Miss McKelvie; F. Sherning and Mrs I. Logan beat I. Potts and Mrs Graham ; E. Smith and Miss Bransou beat H. Fearn and Mrs Fearn; I,. Cheal and Mrs Nelson beat L. Stephenson and Mrs Colbeck; D. Logan and Mrs Logan beat Hullten and Mrs Hullten ; G. Fraser and Mrs Pearse beat J. Price arvd Mrs Price: J. Woodward and Mrs Bennett beat K. Young and Mrs Young; J. Miles and Mrs Cheal had a bye in the first draw, and were then defeated by Foote and Mrs Foote. Second round : Foote and Mrs Foote beat L. Smith and Mrs Watson ; E. Smith and 'Miss Branson beat Sherning and Mrs Logan: Logan and Mrs Logan beat Cheal and Mrs Nelson; Woodward and Mrs Bennett beat Fraser and Mrs Pearse. Semi-finals : Foote and Mrs Foote beat E. Smith and Miss Branson; Woodward and Mrs Bennett beat Logan and Mrs Logan.
