MANGAKINO BADMINTON PLAYERS EXHIBIT SUPERIOR TECHNIQUE

m Although losing by 14 matches to 10 ; R Mangakino in the Memorial Hallj K& Tuesday, August 9, the Taupo BadRjDinton Club took a further step forjtard in learning the technique of the reame. Its performance in view of Bfce opposition can be described as Ksost satisfactory. iThe visitors included in their team prs Lewis, their top ladv, who is Knked high in the TY aikato team, Rnd also their leading man, Cook, itho, however, was suffering from a ibad foot. Though unable to move Kfllckly his control of the shuttle was E'tn object lesson for local pl-ayers IVho particularly appreciated his Biportsmanship in playing a special Kjame in partnership with Mrs Lewis Ilgainst our leading men's pair. I This game proved to be very level ■for the first 12 points, when the exBperience of the visitors told and they ■drew ahead to win comfortably. Both Kof the Taupo leading pairs, Stevenson land Neill in the men's, and Mrs |Davies and Mrs Philpott in the ladies' Idoubles, played well together and jthey should profit greatly as a result Jtti getting matches against more exBperienced opposition. ■ They showed their superiority over ■ their team mates mainly through § ability to force opponents to the back lof the court and to take advantage Iof resulting loose returns. This was I particularly noticeable in the ladies' 1 matches where Mrs Davies and Mrs 1 Philpott won their first match very leasily, but succumbed to the experiJence of Mrs Lewis and her partner l in the second game. B The Taupo second pairs also each Iwon a match but Eileen Gale and i-May Douglas, whose matches both | went to setting, suffered a relapse in | the second match after obiaining I what looked like a winning lead and f finally lost by 14 — 18- McGreevv and 1 Waldron won their first game very |easily but once again experience told f when they played Cook and 1ns 1 partner.

I Staines and Gale were outclassed | by Lewis and Lopdell, and could not I work out.a combination in this game, I but in their second match they overI came a defeatist outlook to win comI fortably. Mrs Staines and Miss Jones I lost both their matches but at the \ end of their seeond- game were ob- | viously improving. In the mixed doubles matches the I strength of the liome team was I shown to be chiefly amongst the top | players of both sexes and their weakI ness a lack of ability to drop into a I forward and back position with -the ; ladv well up to the net. i he match - proved most onjoyable and instructoe from the Taupo point of view, and l.> j judge by their enthusiasm when iti was suggested that they might play additional matches at the end oi. the I evening it was apparent that the visitors also en.joyed themselves. Details of play were as follows : Men's doubles: .Stevenson and Neill lost to Cook and Gardiner, 12—15. | and beat Lewis and Lopdell, 15—13; McGreevy and Waldron beat Duncan | and Bamford 15/6, and lost to Cook and Gardiner 7 — 15; .Staines and Gale lost to Lewis and Lopdell 2 — 15, and beat Duncan and Bamford 15 — 9.
