Increase In Rates

Sir, — I was interested to read a report in the New Zealand ITerald of August 6 headed "Rise I11 Rates At Taupo Oauses Conceru." I, too, feel nuiC'h concerned by the enoianous increase in rates in Taupo over the last few years. When I first bought property there in 1941) the rates were about thirty s&illings. By 1953 they had risen to £5 6s 2d and this year they are £9 9s ld. When is this continual rise going to stop? What I object to is that we seem to be getting nothing in return. No water retieulation, no sewerage and the roads are in a very much worse condition than they were 111 1946. Where is all this inoney going? It is true we now have electricity, but on the Borough Council's own ^ssurance that is paid for out of the .electricity charges, which are very high. I should like to know what other ratepayers have to say on this matter and suggest that you invite a discussion th rough the columns of this newspaper. — I am, etc.,
