WE MAKE NO APOLOGY

We make 110 apology for referring once more to the need for a twenty-four hour telephone service in Taupo, the lack of which gives the town the doubtful distinction of being probahly the largest centre in the country without this amenity. The letter sent out recently by the Postniaster to all telephone subseribers, asking them to fill in and return a forin indieating vhether or not they desire such a continuous service, provioes n easy niethod of obtaining it. There can be no doubt that a maiority of subscribers favour o confiruous service and that they are willing to pav the increase in annuai rental. At the sarne time the extended hours will nol he fortheominr unlos.s tv/o thirds, oi the subscribers ask for thera for 1 continuous service is not given, apart irom. such J appiication, until the n urn ber of subscribers reaches onc tiiousand. . That the tel phone service is not a continuous oue nas | been noted with sarprise in recent times by many visitors, who natnrally expected that a tourist and holiday. centre such as Tauno wouid ha ve such a service. Arguments in support of the extension of hours are hardly needed, for its value in eniereencies such as fire, road and other ac.cidents, sudden illness, and so on is obvious. What is to be urged on those who have not yet sent m them ivT-nlips to th.e Departmental enquiry sent to them, is that il the)' do not do so the Department can only assume that they do not v ant a continnou.s service. A roply i orui not sent n a s the same elfect as oue sent in stating that extension of hours is not desired . All those who look forw ard to the inaugm'ation of a conUnuous telephone service in the near tuture in Taupo shoi'lu send in their replv lorms without delay. _____
