NEXT WEEK'S PANTOMIME

Reliearsals for the three-act panto* mime, "The Enchanted Waltz," being presented by the Taupo District Higli School on Tuesday and Wednesday next, August 10 and 17, have been go* ing well. Mr G- Fooic, headmastor, and Mr Oharles Beslie, produeer, report that the interest and enthusiasm of the cast has been most encouraging. A tremendous amount of work has been ; called for by what Mr Leslie described as "this ambitious presentation," | not only from the cast, but from - others, such as the accompanist, Mrs J. M. Sherwood; musical director, Miss June Armstrong; ballet director, ! Mrs J. W. Birnie ; and those who are ■i organising the ma k ing of costumes, i namely, Mrs Peart, Miss Coley, Mrs J Baker and Mrs Calkin ; and last but not least, the parents. The production of "The Enchanted ■ Waltz" next week will be its I premiere in New Zealand, and will j undoubtedly inark the first occasion \ on which a first New Zealand per* jj formance has taken place in Taupo, j All that is needed to make the oc* | casion the success that the promoters \ deserve is for Taupo people to make 1 sure of filling the Memorial Hall on j Tuesday and Wednesday nights next I •1 ...... J

The valuations were the responsibil j ity of the Valnation Departinent, and® were based in general on prices real*.® isecl for land. Mr Story said the fact that the® Takapuna man's home was valued at I over £4000 did not appear to have j any point, .as rating in Taupo was oo® unimproved value, not capital value. 1 The Borougli Council could only en-i deavour, as it had dorie in the past,® to administer its affairs as carefullj® as possible, and was not responsible® for, nor could it do much about, tbefl fact that costs to-day were highland iaj showing no sign of decreasing. The prospective water scheme m woulcl inevitably mean higher chargeiBj later, but it was obvious that such a || scheme was now an urgent necessitr. M At a well attended and duly adver* m tised public meeting held some time® back to discuss the water scheme, Mr® Story mentioned, there had bees! unanimous agreement that the® scheme should be pushed on.
