Blackberry in Borough A ratepayer's letter read at the last meeting of the Borough Council cornplained that the section adjoining the writer's was a ruass of blackberry, which was continually growing on to complainant's section, and enquired if the Council could do anything to help. The Works Committee were instructed to inspect the properties concerned and ■ take appropriate action. Kaimanawa Street Sealing The Resident Engineer, Ministry of Works, Rotorua, referring to the decisiom of the National Roads Board to bear the full cost of sealing Kaimanawa ,Street, stated in a letter to the ,Town Clerk that he understood the street would be sealed in conjunction with the Council's sealing of other streets in the Borough. As the Council would claim the cost of the Kaimanawa Street sealing from the M.O.W. Office, Rotorua, it would be necessary to keep detailed separate accounts for the work on the street. Cr Barton stated when the letter was read that he had understood that the Roads Board was granting the Council £5000 toward Kaimanawa Street, and said he assumed that, if the job cost less, then the balance of the amount would be available for other sealing. New Approach From Napier Road At the Council meeting on July 20 the Mayor, Mr J. E. Story, stated that he had been informed, by the Ministry of Works, that when the new deviation was inade to bring the Napier Highway into Taupo via Taujhara Road (formerly Rotokawa or "Golf Links" Road) and Waiariki (Spa) Road, the new portion of highway would be a chain and a half in width. Extra width would th^refore be taken by the Ministry, from the junction of the new deviation with "Golf Links Road" down the latter road to the Spa Road, to make this section up to a chain and a half in width. The new deviation will leave the present Napier Highway east of the Terraces Hotel and cross to Tauhara Road between Taharepa Road and Tauhara Mountain. Majestic Theatrp. Additions The Council had before its recent meeting a letter from Messrs Malcolm and Sweet, architects, Napier, seeking preliminary approval for a proposal to extend the auditorium of the Majestic Theatre by adding 21 feet, shifting the biod)ox back, and building men's conveniences under this new portion. Seating accommodation would be Increased from 400 to 500. An additional. exit would be made direct on to the street from the new portion. The Council decided to reply pointing out that under the bylaws the additions would have to be in fire-proof materials unless the increased accommodation were restricted to no more than 10 per cent. of the existing floor area. The application was the first received by the Council concerning additions to buildings situated in the brick or concrete area and built of wood prior to the establishment of the brick area. Memorial Hall Booking Dec. 31 \ The Committee of the Free Kindergarten Association applied to the Council for the use of the War Memorial Hall on Satnrday, December 31, for an evening entertainment. The Committee was planning a long-term programme of functions in its fundraising campaign. The booking asked for was granted. 30 M.P.H. Signs In his traffic report to the Council, Mr S. Miller, Traffic Officer, stated that, the Chief Traffic Officer advised that many offenders explained that their exceeding 30 m.p.h. on the Lake front was because they did not see the signs. He recommended a 30
m.p.h. sign on the Lake front near/sj Tongariro Street in view of motoristsli going south. Cr K. E. Young asked J|I what was the position re a 30 m.p.h.* sign at the Borough boundary on the|| Lake front. The Mayor stated Jhatfi this had not yet been approved by the * Transport Department. Cr Younjjjg said that it was urgently needed and* there would be an accident there "if sooner or later if excessive speedsll were not prevented. ■ 38
