NAPIER ROAD DEVIATION NORTH OF TARAWERA

The Ministry of Works has made a start on a. three-mile section of a major nine-mile deviation on ,the Taupo-Napier* . highway. The deviation will by-pass one of the worst stretches on the road, that between the bridge over the Waipunga River, at the Napier end of the plains beyond Rangitaiki from Taupo, and the Nunneries bridge further south. Some of this deviation was formed before the Second World War but was not completed. While completion of the whole deviation is a longrange plan, the three-mile section from the Nunperies bridge toward Taupo is to be completed and-linked N with the present road by a temporary " road. - When the new road is in use the Nunneries bridge will not be needed, and tenders have been called for a new bridge further south. Completion of the first three-mile sthge will eliminate some of the tratfic hazi&rds ofthe section of highway between Tarawera and the southern end of the plains beyond Rangitaiki.
