C.O.B. WIN McKAY CUP
I Taupo Defeated 12-5 | Oollege Old Boys had a decisive Win over Taupo on Sunday after noon last, winning the final of the McKay Cup knock-out competition by 12 j»ints to five. two unconverted tries TWT' ivstsairy rroiLS try. Following an unfortunate inci.dent some 20 minutes after the start of the game, when the referee, Mr K. ?. Rameka, had occasion to order G. Kopu (C.O.B.) off the field for punchi ing, Old Boys played a* man short. That they secured the win mentioned i despite this handicap indicates their superiority on the day. i The game was played throughout | at a fast pace. For the first five i minutes Old Boys kept Taupo in their I own half, until a niee back movement, £ started by Taupo's halfback, New- | bold, near the twenty-five, led to a I flne dash down the line by Kon Bred- • enbeck, ending in a try under the Fposts by Daley. Panapa put the ball | over to give Taupo a 5-nil lead. Five minutes later Old Boys were : in Taupo's twenty-five when a pen- | alty awarded them gave winger Reg Ham the opportunity to kick an easy |;goal from 15 yards out. Taupo 5, | Old Boys 3. A minute later play was |;en into Old Boys territory and a lalty kick by Panapa saw the ball the bar, only to bounce up and instead of over. day continued to be hard and fast, f it was noticeable that Taupo's kling was much improved. On a nber of occasions when Ham got ig with the ball under his arm he 5 brought down by nice low tackThe Taupo forwards, on the >le, were seen to better advantage q the Old Boys' pack, working •e in unison than the latter. Old s' backs were superior to Taupo's, jglT they, in common with Taupo, opportunities too often through jcurate passing. ld Boys were in Taupo's twentyseven or eight minutes after n's ' first penalty goal, when a alty was given against Taupo for :ing the ball out of the scrum and n repeated his previous effort to i Old Boys a 6—5 lead.
Bfe Just befoyfc half-time an Old Boys Iback movement brought the ball to Bwinger Reg Ham some yards outside Elfie twenty-five and a determined dash fcbwn the line saw him go over for Ban unconverted try to make the halfBway score Old Boys 9, Taupo 5. || Soon after resumption Taupo took Bihe offensive for a period but the Kacks' passing^ was not good, and Old filiBoys' aggressiveness put them on the jtdefensive again, although at no stage iflid the game become in any degree fene-sided. Some six or seven minKites before the end Ham again went Bpver, wide out, the resultant 12 5 Jlltt} being maintained by Old Boys Ro the final whistle. ■fcln the last few minutes Taupo atSgacked again and again, and Lennie fealmforth, who as fullback for Taulipo had done some good line-kicking, Kcame up into the backs for a couple Rf. stimulating efforts. Old Boys, howIfever, were not to be beaten and mainKtained their general superiority desgpite being a man short. BfeFor the winners Reg Ham was the Rutstanding man of the day, scoring pl his team's points, and always Bshowing determination and looking RSangerous when in possession of the ipkll. For Taupo, the pack as a whole Ifcorked hard thr'oughout, while Newliold, at half, and Balmforth, at fullpfack. played useful games. Panapa Bjwas again the king-pin of the Taupo Racks, and not a few times the team ifeould have been in bad case without Him ,to cover up. B|The '"ordering off" of G. Kopu in Ette course, of the College Old Boys v. ffeaupo match last Saturday was disJ||ussed by the Rugby ,Sub-union at its lioeeting on Monday when Kopu was B|nspended 'for two playing Saturdays. gpt this meeting it was reported that, iinknown to the referee, a substitute Hijollege Old Boys' player had taken Ktke field to replace Kopu-, In view lipf this it was decided to hold over a Ipeision regarding the result of this
match pending further investigation by the Sub-union. A further decision was made that any player ordered off should be stood down until he appears before the tJnion.
