Official figures released by the Minister of Transport show that driving after drinking is on the increase in New Zealand. In 1953, 29 per cent of fatal accidents involved liquor to some degree. In 1954, 44 per cent involved liquor. So far this year, 47 per cent involved liquor. In 1953, 51.7 per cent of fatal traffic accidents occurred at the week-end, and in 1954, 53 per cent. So far this year 60.2 per centj of fatal accidents had occurred at week-ends, and many week-end accidents involved liquor. "If we are to have safer roads," said the Minister (the Hon. W. S. Goosman), "we must have safer drivers."
