PLAY READING EVENING
The first reading at the Taupo Dramatic Society's monthly meeting at the Memorial Hall on Wednesday, May 6, was a very dramatic little play, "The Phantom Ship," by Mary F. Matheson. Doris McBeth was the producer with a good cast comprising Treve Price as Mrs Hattie Hooper; Pat Bostock as' her daughter, Lucy Hooper; Eileen Gale as Mary Lou Banks; and Kay Howie as Grace Merrill, an American. "Novelette," a comedy-drama by Philip Johnson was the second play read. It is set in the servants' room of a house in Kensington on a summer afternoon and the producer, Sally Kent, had gathered together a cast comprising Jean Dixon as Iris, the parlourmaid; Avis Acres, Ella, the sewing maid; Catherine Scott, Ivy, the kitchen maid; Val Stevens, Mrs Gosling, the cook; Dulcie Cohen, as Ella's "aunt", Mrs Belinda Sykes. Once again the readings were very well done and provided the members present with excellent entertainment. G.A.A.
