COLLEGE OLD BOYS WIN FIRST MATCH
College Old Boys won their lirst match of the season when they defeated Taupo on Saturday last, at Tauranga- taupo, by 22 — 14. Taupo won the toss and had the wind advantage in the first half. Two minutes after play commenced Taupo took the ball into Old Boys' territory for D. Woodward to seore by the corner, 3 — 0. Soon after, a ruck took oi ace on the C.O.B. goal line and Vedder put: the ball over from a penalty to give Taupo a sixpoint lead. Macken and Bredenbeck made desperate attempts to cross the line but sonnd tackling for Old Boys by Biddle and Ilam stopped this attack. Ten minutes before half time, C.O.B. took the offensive and Simon scored in the corner, 6 — 3. Simon scored a few minutes later from a scrum on Taupo's line. Kopu making no mistake with the kick to make the half time score S — 6 against Taupo. Soon after resumption the C.O.B. forwards. forced their way to the Taupo goal line but this attack ended with a drop-out from tlie twenty-five. For the next 15 minutes both teams threw the ball about, and .1. Ilam forced his way over for a trv, which Kopu converted, 13 — 6. Later, Vedder failed to goal a penalty kick awarded Taupo, and then F. Biddle scored a tine try, taking the ball at his toe from ontside the Taupo twenty-five. Kopu's failure to convert left the score 16 — 6. From a scrum ontside the Taupo twenty-five Brian Garlick received the ball and made a fine run, only to be tackled by J. Biddle a few yards from Old Boys' line. Bredenbeck, following up well, took the ball at his toe and then rau on to score near the posts. Vedder's kick failed, 16 — 9. Old Boys lead was then increased by three, Kopu kicking a penalty goal to make the score 19 — 9. Taupo went over to attack and Cosgrove received the ha 11 to run in for a try near the posts, to which Vedder added the major points, 19 — 14. In the final minutes of the game S. Nepia increased the C.O.B. score with a well deserved try. The kick failed, leaving the final score: Old Boys 22, Taupo 14. Mr Gosling had charge of the game. High School Beat C.O.B. In the opening game of the junior Rugby season at Taupo it was disappointing to see the College Old Boys taking the field with nine players only, for their game against Taupo District High School. High School were victorious by 17 — 8From the kick-off C.O.B. attacked, and keeping up the pressure missed a goal from a penalty in front of the posts, but in resultant loose play the ball travelled from P. Northcroft to Rameka, who scoi'ed by the posts, T. Wall converting to give Old Boys a 5 — 0 lead. Iligh School attacked and from a penalty Turetahi. scored, 5 — 3. Later Turetahi, at fullback, picked up on his twenty-five, kieked into Old Boys' territory, and following througli fast kieked the ball out of a defender's hands, raced on to gather in and score near the posts, making the score High School (>, Old Boys 5. After ragged mid-field play Turetahi, alm-ost on half-time, again kieked over the defenders' heads, Ileid following through to gather in and go over between the posts, Turetahi converting, High School thus leading by 11-— 5. High School played together better in the second half and only poor handling prevented the score being doubled. Tahau broke through for Old Boys in a loose for ward rush, and scored wide out to lvring* Old Boys' tally to eight.
