HYDRO-ELECTRIC SCHEME

Increasing Demand Reporting to the Borough Council meeting held on April 20, the Electrieal Inspector, Mr J. M. Sherwood, advised that high and low tcnsion reticulation in Pepperell's Block and the Ministry of Works housing area was alrnost completed, and would shortly be connected. The number of consumers to April 18 was 1110, 34 new eonnections having been made during the month ending on that date. During the year ended March 31, 1955, power generated had totalled 2,080,008 units, compared with 623,350 units for the previous 12 months. Cr W. G. Morris inquired as to when reticulation could be extended in Gradwell's Subdivision, south of

the Borough boundary. There were 15 houses, all occupied by permanent residents and all within a small area, for which applications had been in for over 12 months. Cr Morris said he had told inquirers that, under a Government Loan's Board restriction on the last power loan, the Council had been barred from extending reticulation until that within the Borough had been finally completed. The Mayor, Mr J. E. Story, said the reticulation would be done as soon as was possible. It was difficult to state just when, however owing to the contractor not being available at all times. The Council had before it a letter from Mr C. R. Carnachan, with regard to the provision of power and light for Tauhara Township, on the Taupo - Turangi Highway between Three and Four Mile Bays, and enclosing a petition from residents and property owners of that area. The petition asked that a survey be made and advice given as to the cost of power and as to guarantees required from consumers.

It was decided to refer the petition to the engineer, Mr Lloyd Mandeno, for a report.
