Gifts for Lake Swimmers During their recent visit to Taupo, when they received public presentations in honour of their respective feats in swimming Lake Taupo from south to north on January 30, 1955, Misses Margaret Sweeney and Pat Hastings were presented by Mr and Mrs G. W. P. Reid, of Tamamutu Street, with gifts to mark their admiration, as old residents of Taupo, for the courage and endurance shown by the two swimmers. Miss Sweeney's gift was a framed aerial photogra,ph of the Lake, and Miss Hasting's a taniko work belt. Other gifts handed to the swimmers by the Mayor at the public presentation, were enlarged photographs for each of them, given by Mr F. I. Rutherford, of Nukuhau, showing Miss Sweeney wading ashore at. Taupo after her historic swim. : : New Libary Room It was decided at the mid-March Council meeting to build a new Public Library room west of the present Borough building, and to use the present libary room for additional needed Borough offices. Several councillors expressed the opinion that space should be provided for reading-room facilities, so that visitors could go there and refer to copies of the principal papers. sj: # 5i: Flying Bails If there are records for the distance a bai 1 travels before hitting the ground after being dislodged from the stumps, oue must have been esfablished in the City-United senior Palmerston North orieket match. With the assistance of a following wind, T. McQiiilkaii sent one bail flying 120 feet after shattering the stumps of the I'nited batsman, G. Manning. The bai'l was recovered near flie boundary.
