The latest of I such new services is the Taupo LaunI'dry, which its owner, Mr E. Darllington, hopes wiil be ready to comjfmence operations in two or three |p^eeks, time. pj'Housed in a concrete building on Ithe east-side of Ruapehu Street, not jpfar from Waiariki (Spa) Iioad, the iequipment is of the most modern | type available for steam laundry Iwork, with niany details evolved by Ifrecent research work in New Zea- | land. Operating the piant there wilf Ibe a -staff of six. The laundry will | be managed- by Mr and- Mrs M. Iteid, j|who are at present engaged in laun|dry work at Wairakei, fe After being sor.ted and markecT Ithe washing will go to a two-speed | wushing machhie which deals with § up to llOlbs of washing at a time, lequivalent to 130 sheets. This |,yvashes, bleaches, blues and rinses in f about 45 to 50 minutes. p- A hydro-extractor running at 1100 /.revolutions per minute then extracts | water to make the washing 75 per I'cent. dry in 10 minutes. For towels land woollens a drying tumbler is jtused, steam lieated, from which the phaterials come to be folded while lliot, the process taking about 15 ^ minutes. K.;AU starched laundry, and sheets land* pillowslips, are ironed by an. | ironing machine weighing 10 tons, of | which the revolving drum is 10 feet / ]ong and 30 inches in diameter. Four operators serve this | machine, which is steam heated. y.Moisture is sncked out through holes | in the drum as it rotates, and is rei moved by an exhaust fan. For shirts | and smocks a double rotary press of Ithe. latest type has been installed. |For artTcles not suited for ironing . otherwise, provision is made for I hand ironing. I To supply steam, an automatic oil- ■ fired boiler is provided. The oil fuel | is drawn by an electrically driven I suction pump from the fuel tank, Isituated outside underground, and is 1 atomized and injected into the fire- | box. Fuel is turned on and off by San automatic mechanism "set to mainItain a given pressure of steam, and a t'time-clock can be set so that steam " will be available at whatever time it is desired to commence operations. |: Hot water is provided by a S00 ' gallon hot-water cylinder, automatic- | ally heated by steam from the boiler. ; The water in the washing-machine is . brought to and maintained at boiling point for a given period by a steam- | heated coil, this being a feature not available to household washing|machines.
