GARDEN CIRCLE MEETS
The Gardening Circle of the Taupo Countrywomen's Institute met for the first time this year at Mrs W. King's home on. Wednesday afternoon, February 10, when there was a very good attendance. Mrs Stowe has resigned from the position of Secretary, and her place has been taken by Mrs Gumbley. , . Letters of thanks and appreciation have been sent to Mr N. A. Duthie, Taupo; Mrs Stan Goldsworthy, Papateotoe, and Miss Janet Finley, of Cambridge, for their donations of roots and bulbs. Members were very intqrested in new varieties of flowers' on* display. A cucumber some twelve inches in length brought by a member and grown in Mr Drummond's garden, Rickit Street, roused considerable interest as a sample of what could be produced in Taupo, as also did a plot of kohi rabi in Mrs King's garden. This last had been grown from seed sown toward the end of November, and its early maturity showed its value as a vegetable for Taupo gardens. Once regarded as a farm crop, it is now a popular garden vegetable. It needs the same treatment as cabbage. It should be grown without check until the tubers, which have a mild turnip flavour, are not more than four inches in diameter, when they should be used.
