STAINED GLASS FOR MEETING HOUSE
Dutch Artist's Work The new meeting-house, "Ta.peka", bcing erectcd at Waihi, hca.dquai t.ei .s of the Tu wharetoa Tribe, is to ha.ve a stained glass window dcsigncd by Mr W. M. Roestenburg, a. Dutch artist with a European reputation. The window will be the first of its soit in New Zealand. Mr Roestenburg's murals and stained glass windows have a world reputation. Now living, with his five sons, in New Zealand, examples of his work are to be seen already in a number of New Zealand chuiches. For the Catholic Chapel at the Waiouru Military Camp he has paintcd an exquisitely beautiful "Our Lady of New Zealand", with a typical New Zealand background. The basic sketch for the Waihi meeting-house window has Tongariro Mountain as a background, edgings of Maori design, and a central figure from the legendary past of NgatiTu wharetoa. In preparing for this work Mr Roestenburg has read works on Maori art. and on the Maori people, their history and traditions, and has heard something of the legends of the Tuwharetoa people from Mr Pateriki Hura.
