Hastings Congratulated • At its meeting on Fcbruary 2 the Taupo - B&bftgh Council decid^d to coinmemQrate Miss" Margaret Swecn,ey$>Mis&t ?s\dlminin^; from Stump Bay,. near Tokaanu, to. the beach near the foot of Tongariro Street, Taupo/ on January 30. ' - Cr W. G. Morris ' suggested, after referring to Miss Sweeney's. suchessful attempt, and Miss Pat Hasting's swim to Rangatira Point fropl 'Ihe s^ime starting point, that a .cpmmemorative tablet be placed nq^r th'e spot where Miss Sweeney lashore. A small cairn or perftaps a Iseat might be .built with a plaque 1 giving details of Miss Sw^eney'.s achi^ement. The Mayor stated that he had -re** ( ceived offers from citizens prepared .to assist in the erection of some such i permanent memorial. Cr K. E. Young thought that the proposed memorial should be sorpething useful, such as a seat. On the motion of Cr Morris, seconded by Cr Barton, it was decided that a commemorative tablet be incorporated in a seat-to be- placed on the Lake front !above the "spot where Miss Sweeney landed. > On the motion of the Mayor, Mr J. E/Story, Ihe Council decided to wtnte ,to Miss Sweeney and Miss Hasting^ congratulatftig them on their respective achievements. It was also decided on the motion of Cr J. M. Stan- % ley, seconded by Cr Morris, that an illuminated address be presented by the Council to Miss Sweeney.
