THE END OF THE COACHING ERA

A picture of the former Post Office that will revive nostalgic memories of the good old days. It shows mail coaches about to leave Taupo, and one of the early service cars. Driving the left-hand coach is the late Mr Charlie Jones. The driver of the other coach is the late Mr Joseph Crowther. The rider is the late Mr Poi Rutene. Mr Frank Butcher, now living in Auckland, is at the wheel of the service car. The child near the kerb is Whitu Wineera, later drowned in the Lake, next to him being Mrs Whata Reweti, Mrs Taraipine Hunia and Mr Jack Driberg The latter was a well-known sprinter in his earlier days in Hawke's Bay, and later was on the Telegraph Linesman's staff in Taupo

and caretaker of the A.C. Baths.
