MARCHING GIRLS GIVE COLOURFUL DISPLAY
TAUPO CH AMPION SHIPS HELD
The Taupo Marching Championships, held on Saturday, December 11, at the Domain, Tongariro Street, overlooking the Lake, and organised by the Taupo Marching Association, provided a gay and colourful spectacle. Ten teams were present, coming from King Country and Bay of Plenty, while two bands provided the necessary music, the Rotorua Highland and District Pipe Band and the Rotorua Municipal Band. The judging of costumes and the teams f all in was done at the Taupo Sehooi before the public display, which began with a street parade to the Domain from the top of Tongariro Street. One section of five teams was led by the Rotorua Municipal Band followed by the second section of five teams headed by the Rotorua Highland Band. The Mayor and Mayoress of Taupo, Mr and Mrs J. E. Story, took the salute between Heuheu and Tuwharetoa Streets, with them Mr and Mrs G. Bonnor, president and secretary respectively of the Taupo Marching Association. On arrival at the Domain the parade formed up and the teams were welcomed by the Mayor. Teams Taking Part The teams taking part in the competitions were: Tauranga Highlanders A, Tokoroa Foresters, Taupo Crusaders, Hauraki (Mt. Maunganui), Glen Eire (Taumaru-
nui), Red Cadets (Edgecumbe), Tauranga Highlanders B, Rotorua Royalettes and Emeraldines (Taumarunui). The Royalettes Midget Team also took part in the street parade and the spectacular Serpentine March, and gave a marching display.
The Serpentine March, following the competitons, was a colourful and picturesque spectacle, led by Shona George (Crusaders) and Hiner oa Raymond (Hauraki), ending with all teams formed up in front of the judges in readiness for the presentation of trophies by the Mayoress, Mrs Story. The weather, though threatening at times, remained fine except. for one extremely heavy shower, which fell as the Royalettes, winners of the Open Championship, were marching. Though drenched to the skin the team carried their display through undaunted. Competition Results The competitions resulted as follows: Open Championship, Woodward Cup and medals presented by Taupo Girl Guides, won oy Rotorua Royalettes; runners-up medals Taupo Crusaders. Novice Competition, Challenge Cup and medals, Glen Eire (Taumarunui) ; wnnersup medals, Emeraldines (Taumarunui). Champion Leader, lst, medal (presented by Taupo Girl Guides), A. Russell (Royalettes) ; runner-up medal, H. Raymond (Hauraki, Mt. Maunganui). Best Novice Leader, medal (presented by Girl Guides), N. Brown (Glen Eire); runner-up, Ft. Beauchamp (Emeraldines)-. Leaders Display, Challenge Cup md medals presented by S. Woodvard, Hauraki. Costumes, Stevens Ihallenge Cup, Royalettes. In;tructor's Prize, Mrs W. Barron, Royalettes. (Continued from Page One) The judges were Mr N. F. McMillan, (Rotorua), chief judge; marching, Misses N. Bates, L. Maika and H. Warbrick (Rotorua) ; costumes, Mesdames J. C. Young and K. Bogue (Taupo). Mr C. S. Currie marshalled the street parade and the Serpentine March> Mr W. Henderson being field marshall. Visiting officials congratulated the Taupo Association on their organisation for the day, the programme being carried out without a hitch. Features of the day were the excellent service rendered by members of the Taupo Troop, Legion of Frontiersmen, who controlled entrance gates, traffic and parking, and by the Sports Queen Carnival Committee, who undertook the catering.
