GARDENING CIRCLE

The December meeting of the Taupo Countrywomen's Institute Gardening Circle was held at Mrs H. Gradwell's home, Wheretia Street. Mrs W. King gave a talk on cut fiower exhibits in flower shows. In addition to points concerning the quality of the flowers, the speaker emphasised the importance of complying with schedule requirements, such as the number of blooms and of different colours, specified, and type of container to be used. The judges had to disregard entries not complying with all such requirements. Mrs G. Davis brought to the meeting a colleetion of native flowers from the Tongariro National Park which were much admired. Mrs K. Smith showed a floral bon-bon and demonstrated how it was made. Members exchanged plants and seeds. Mrs E. F. Wright was congratulated on winning Mrs Smyrk's prize, and Mrs Stowe on winning the points prize, at the recent flower show. Mrs King reported that Mr N. A. Duthie had kindly said he would give the Circle some Iris rhizomes, the offer being much appreciated. Sprays were presented to the secretary, Mrs Stowe, and the convenor, Mrs King, and a Christmas gift was given to the' latter, consisting of a charming miniature bird-bath ornament in Italian alabaster.
