m ■ \ ! m A number of charges brought under the trout fishing regulations were heard before Mr W. AY Harlow, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court, Taupo, on Friday, November 26, in respect of offences during the experimentai) winter season just ended. Kenneth Prouse, for using fish roe as bait in the Tongariro River on August 22, was fined £1 with costs £1, Prosecuting, Mr S. A. McNamara, Conservator of Wild Life, stated that defendant when accosted by Ranger P. Bursta^l had said, "Just njy luck to strike a ranger— it's the first and last time I've used it." k L. E. Munro and L. G. New were charged with fishing in the Tongariro River near the Poutu junction with spoon baits, it being a "fly only" area, and also with using spoons with more than one hook. P. Burstall, ranger, stated in evidence that he saw Munro fishing and casting what he thought was a spoon. He asked him to reel in his line and Munro, while doing so, purposely broke the line. He admitted he had been using a spoon with three hooks. New came out of the water and attempted to remove the spoon from his line, but the ranger seized it. In each case fines were imposed of £2 for using improper bait, and of £1 for using more tl^an onei hook, with costs of £1 on each charge. Maurice William Jones was charged with fishing without a current license on September 4. He had informed the ranger that he had left his license at home, but it was found that he had in fact not taken out a license. For fishing in Stump Bay without a current license Mrs Norma Carron was fined £1/10/- with costs £1. Defendant had been with her husband in a boat and had claimed she was only holding her husband's rod. Found by Ranger A. G. Hall fishing in Delatour's Pool, on the Waitahanui River, Pouta Northcroft had "bolted" while the ranger checked two other anglers' licenses, after claiming that he hadj bought a license at Logan's Store. It transpired he had not done so. Fine £1/10/- with costs £1. An interesting collection of garden forks on long handles was brought into Court by the Departmental olficer, but owing to several summonses not having been served their angling uses were not disclos-, 3d.
