CARNIVAL ACTIVITIES
Maori Queen Announcements. The Maori Queen Committee announce that the winner of the Tea Service competition was Mr P. M. Graham. Plans are already in hand for a South Sea Island Ball in aid of the Maori Queen. Dancers are asked to dress the part of some Island character or feature for example a mermaid, cannibal, beachcomber. The date will be announced later. The Talent Quest Concert will be held in Rickit's Hallu orf Sunday night next. ❖ * . Sfc Speedway Races. The Citizens' Queen motor-cycle speedway races are to be held in the sports ground tomorrow week, Saturday, November 20, when visiting speedsters will provide thrills, if not spills. There will be races for local riders also. ❖ %
Election News Plus Barbecue! On Saturday evening, Election Night, the Maori Queen Committee are staging a Barbecue and Dance at the Municipal Motor Camp, and special arrangements have been made to broadcast the election results as they come in. There will be horseshoe pitching, entertainers, prizes for best dressed cowgirl and cowboy, and Mr Barbecue will be present, with a prize for whoever discovers him. ❖ ❖ ❖ Coming Events. The Sports Queen Committee thank all who gave so generously to make their Fun Fair and Barn Dance successful, and announce that another Barn Dance is to be held, again at the Tauhara Barn, in response to numerous requests. Saturday, December 4, is the night. The same day is to be Sports Gala Day, with tug-of-war championship, Crusaders' marching' display, children's picnic events, and Bathing Beauty and Mr Taupo contests, both for under-eight-year-olds.
Friday Night Tug-of-War. A tug-of-war contest, with four teams representing respectiVely Tuck Bros. mill, McKean's mill, Taupo Sawmills and Huka Timbermills, will be held in Tongariro Street tonight, Friday, November 12 under the auspices of the Sports Queen Committee. It will be the first such contest to be seen in Taupo using modern championship equipment, This is being obtained from Putaruru, where a contest with a £100 prize recently attracted great attention. The teams sit on a raised platform, so that all can see, with foot rests to preverit slipping, and when taking the strain on the rope are unable to pull the other team until a lever is pulled to commence the struggle. The contest will commence at 7.15 p.m. Those who have seen this modern form of tug-of-war state that it provides an outstanding and exciting spectacle.
