On Friday afternoon, October 15, at the Landing Reserve, Col. J. G. Hearne, U.S.A. Embassy military atuache, handed over to Mr Bernard Fletcher, of Taupo, the launch which he has looked after for some years, and which was in the War years used on Lake Taupo by merrioers of the Embassy staff. There was a small gathering of iriends and relatives of Mr "Bernie" Fletcher, who assembled to show cheir regard for the recipient and cheir appreciation of the American Government's generous action. There was no formality, and as •Bernie" smilingly remarked, when Col. Hearne and he climbed back to he jetty from the boat, "No speeches!"

Col. Hearne was obviously pleased when Bernie Fletcher asked him to accept a framed photograph of the launch and himself (see front page, "Times" 15/10/54), Our picture above, from a photograph taken following the presentation, shows (left to right) Mrs Fletcher Sen., her grandson Bernie Fletcher, Col. Hearne, Mrs F. Fletcher and Mr F. Fletcher, Bernie 's parents.
