RETIRING POSTMASTER HONOURED

PRESENTATIONS MADE TO MR AND MRS B. M. ARMSTRONG There was a large and representative gathering of Taupo citizens at Rickit's Hall at 8 p.m. on Monday, October 4, to express their good wishes to Mr and Mrs B. M. Arrnstrong on the occasion of Mr Armstrong's retirement from the Post and Telegraph service, and his relinquishment of the position of Postmaster at Taupo. During his years in Taupo Mr Arrnstrong took a keen interest in the town, and devoted much work in particular to the interests of the Taupo R.S.A., and the Taupo Bowling Club. He was a member of the committee of the former body, and was President of the Bowling Club, which owed much to his energy and enthusiasm. Mrs Arrnstrong was a keen member of and worker for the Taupo Women's Bowling Club, of which she was recently elected a life member. These facts received due mention when the Mayor, Mr J. E. Story, on behalf of the citizens, presented to Mr Arrnstrong a travelling rug, together with a cheque, and to Mrs Arrnstrong a gold self-winding wristlet watch. In doing so Mr Story mentioned Taupo's recently erected first telephone box, outside the Post Office, which he said would always remind them of Mr Arrnstrong, in whose term of office it had been erected (laughter). Mr Story said it was hoped that Mr and Mrs Arrnstrong/ after they had had a holiday, would return and settle in Taupo (applause). On behalf of the Taupo R.S.A., Mr E. F. Wright, president, then briefly referred to Mr Armstrong's interest in and work for that body, and on it's behalf presented Mr Arrnstrong with a suitably inscribed barometer. Returning thanks on behalf of Mrs Arrnstrong and himself, Mr Arrnstrong, who was received with applause, referred to some of the events of his years in the service, and to his interest in Taupo. He had been asked, he said, whether they would retire in Taupo, but at the moment he really did not know. They would first have a trip round, and in any case he had promised to return for the opening of the Bowling Club's coming season. The audience then joined in singing "For They Are Jolly Good Fellows." During the evening dancing took place to the music of Mrs Mika's orchestra. Musical items were con]/tributed by Mr V. Wilson, Mrs J. Williams, Mr, E. Darlington and Mr J. M. Graham, while extras were played by Miss E. Darlington and Mr J. Davies.
