U.S.A. GIFT TO TAUPO BOATING MA N

Today, Friday, October 15, Colonel Julian G. Hearne, United States 'Embassy military attache, is to hand over to Mr Bernard Fletcher, son of Mr and Mrs Fred Fletcher, of Taupo, the launch which Mr Fletcher has maintained and used for a number of years. During the Second World War the boat was used on Lake Taupo by members of the Embassy staff, and later was placed in Mr Fletcher's care. Widely and affectionately known as "Bernie," Mr Fletcher, despite being severely crippled and having to use crutches and a motor-pow-ered wheel chair, is a skilful boating man. He has himself added a cabin and maintained the craft in ship-shape condition unaided. Through the' generosity of the United States Government, Colonel Hearne has been authorised to hand the launch over "free of strings" to Mr Fletcher. "Bernie" Fletcher has said that the news has come as a wonderful surprise and that it is indeed a generous gesture by the American Government. Our picture shows "Bernie" and his boat, both amongst the best-known features of the Taupo water-front.
