PRECAUTIONS AGAINST FIRE HAZARD

FIRE CALL PHONE NUMBERS In conversation with the "Times" the acting-Superintendent of the Taupo Volunteer Fire Brigade, Mr J. O'TooIe, and the Brigade seeretary, Mr B. Armstrong, emphasised a number of points in connection with the fire hazard incidental to the commencement of dry surnmery weather in the Taupo area. Parents are warned of the danger arising from children having matches in their possess,on, especially in connection with the fireworks "season." A number of fires in recent seasons have been attributable to children litera lly playing with fire. As in other years, the Brigade will organise arrangements for a bonfire on Guy Fawkes n: ght in the sports ground, under the supervision of the Brigade. Reporting Fires The best method of reporting a fire during the hours when the telephone exchange is open is to ring the exchange. When the exchange is closed a number of telephones throughout the Borough are connected direct to Gillies Motors Ltd., Tongariro Street. All residents should iascertain which of these "Fire C.all" telephones is nearest to their respective places of residence. The following is a list of Fire Call telephones, which might usefully be cut out and kept for quick reference near the telephone: — W. L. Haines, Waipahihi, 5M; G. Davis, Kaimanawa Street, 31; Fishbach, M.O.W. Settlement, cr. Rickit Street and Waikato Street, 60; I. Fox, Heuheu Street, 213; P. Ford, Waipahihi Avenue, 316; T. Morse, Golf Links Road, 339; H. Hill, Henry Hill Road, 63D; Miss E. D. Anderson, Henry Hill Road, 63M; M. W. Nelson, Mere Road, 63R; P. Silva, Gillies Avenue, 63S. An alarm is mounted below a red light on the front of the Fire Station, Horomatangi Street, and to give an alarm the glass should be brcken and the button pressed. The Station telephone is 89. Cars At Fires The Brigade particuiarly asks spectatGrs at fires not to park cars near the scene, and on no account to drive over hoses, which is an offence liable to prosecution, as is also any failure to comply with requests made during the course of a fire by the Brigadesmen. Access roads to the Lake beach for enabling the Brigade to obtain water must not be obstructed by parked vehicles. The Brigade urges hcuseholders to provide their hon es with a chemical fire-extinguisher of the foam type. In this connection new types are now available which are simple to operate and maintain, and the Brigade superintendent or secretary will gladly advise as to these. A final word of warning concerned ashes from fires or stoves. On no account should these be thrown out without being thoroughly extinguished. If thrown on or near rubbish or growth of any sort they may easily cause a fire even hours later.
