CHARGES FOR WAR MEMORIAL HALL

REFERRED TO COMMITTE At* the Borough Council meeting on Wednesday, October 6, the matter of proposed charges for the War Memorial Hall was brought before the Council in a letter from the Taupo Rugby Sub-Union. The letter stated that while the Sub-Union could meet the charges in the case of its Annual Ball, affiliated clubs would find the greatest difficulty in making a dance pay at the charges published. It was felt that sports clubs and other organisations would be affected similarly. Te Kuiti, the letter stated, with a 4000 population had a municipal hall opened four years ago at a cost of £17,000 with the{ charges at £1 per hours including the supper room. The Council was asked to review the charges and to hire the Hall at a more lenient rental. In discussion Councillors mentioned several points. One was that there seemed an impression in the minds of some of the public that all future functions would be held in the new Hall. This seemed a mistakep idea, for it was obvious that some bodies with a smaller following would not require so large a Hall for their functions. It was also pointed out that it seemed undesirable to book the Hall for a regular weekly day, particularly mid-week or end of week, for a long period in respect of any one organisation, as this would seriously hamper choice of bookings for functions, which required the large Hall, such as the C.A.S., Dramatic Society and visiting entertainments. j It was also suggested that charges for Friday and S&turday nights might perhaps reasonably be made higher than for other nights of the week, otherwise too many bookings, for functions not requiring so large a Hall, would be applied for on end-of-the-week nights. Councillors suggested that charges should not be too 'high, but pointed out that costs of maintenance should be met. It appeared that a caretaker would be necessary. Cr K. E. Young moved that the matter of the proposed charges be referred to the Hall Committee, with a recommendation that they be kept as low as possible. The motion was seconded by Cr C. J. Vedder and carried.
