SPORTS QUEEN NOTES
Wheelbarrow Derby. The Sports Queen Wheelbarrow Derby run in Tongariro Street on Friday night last drew a large crowd of spectators and eleven entries, a carnival atmosphere being created by the fancy dresses of a number of the contestan'ts and the unofficial fireworks with which the proceedings were enlivened. The start and finish line was in front of the War Memorial Hall, and an efficient loud-speaker commentary by Mr J. K. Bogue kept the crowd well informed. Preliminary runs over the course ^ by Mr Bernie Fletcher in his motor wheelchair, pushing two of the Derby contestants and their barrow, caused an amusing diversion. The Derby was won by Messrs Joe Dunn and Jim Booth, with Michael Orr and Pat McNicholas second, and Ray George and Ron Darlington third. An additional race held later was won by Brian Garlick and Franklin Reid. The prize for the Wheelbarrow Derby was donated by Mr George Lishman. ❖ >; % Madame Singh. An attraction tonight, Friday, will be the appearance of Madame Singh, Chinese philosopher noted for her mysterious powers, whose tent will be erected in the vicinity of the Carnival Committee rooms, near the Post Office. ❖ ❖ ❖ Rottle Drive. The Sports Queen Committee has organised a "bottle drive," to be held on Saturday, October 16, and residents are asked to have their bottles ready that morning, when collectors will call.
