VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS
GREATEST DANGER NOT FRGM N G AURUHOE - TON G ARIRO AREA Officers of the Dominion Laboratory and Dominion Physical Laboratory have made New Zealand the first Southern Hemisphere laboratory to use the method of determining the age of carbons ancl one of the first four in the world. In 1 stating this, the 28th Annual Report of the Department of Scientific and1 Industrial Researh adds that a result has been the discovery of a possible method of forecasting volcanic eruptions.
It is already clear, says the re~ port, that during the past 9000 I years, and probably much longer, there have been at more or les.s regular intervals, eruptions of rhyolite from a number of vents in the Taupo-Rotorua area. The later eruptions included glowing avalanches. This indicates that the greatest potential danger is from rhyolite eruptions, and not from the active andesitic volcanoes of Tongariro National Park.
