SITE OF ATIAMURI HYDRO DAM

Scoops and mechanical shovels are digging into and re-shaping the banks of the Waikato River at Atiamuri, forming the diversion cut and excavating for the foundations of the long earth wing for the main concrete dam. The photograph above is taken looking upstream toward the new Bailey bridge now carrying the highway (centre). The old bridge is over the ridge to left, the diversion cut to the right. The new highway will be about a quarter mile below the dam.
