"THE FEMALE OF THE SPECIES"
"IS MORE DEADLY THAN THE MALE" A report presented to the BorI ough Council meeting on Wednesday, August 4, indicated that all was not well at the Women's Rest Room building in Tongariro Street. It would appear from the report that women were even more destructive than men. The penny-in-the-slot mechanims on the doors had been broken, obviously intentionally, and it seemed that financial returns from these ingenious inventions would obviously not cover the expenses of repairs and maintenance.
One of the flush doors had had the bottom portion smashed in. Two "ladies," visitors passing through Taupo, had been overheard in the town describing how they had broken a door in, and a loyal citizen had at once reported this to the Borough . authorities. Though prompt action was taken, it appeared, as King Charles I remarked upon a famous occasion, that the birds had flown. The Council resolved, more in sorrow than in anger, to increase the free benefits of the Welfare State by removing the penny-in-the-slot financial fixtures from the doors.
