PLAY READING

The fortnightly play reading of the Taupo Dramatic Society, held in Rickit's Hall on Wednesday, July 28, was notable for the first appearance of a group of junior readers in the persons of six High School girls. They were welcomed by the Society's president, Col J. E. Barton, as being likely to provide future recruits to the Society's casts.

The first reading was of Anton Chekhov's amusing sketch, "The Proposal," produced by Di Young. Shirley Laughton took the part of Natalya, John Kellett that of Lomov and Bob Acres that of Stepan. The reading was most successful and the producer is to be congratulated, with those taking part, on what was one of the best readings put on by the Society.

The sketch read by the High School group was "Cottage To Let" (Hopkinson), those taking part being Ruth Mitchell, Shona Torepe, Robin Booth, Gillian Woodward, Pat Bostock and Cynthia Taylor. Their reading indicated that good work had been put into the production, which was a promising first effort on the part of all members of the cast. A special mention, however, must be given to Shona Torepe's graceful and charming portrayal of a wealthy American woman who wants to rent a cottage in the English countryside.
