PLAY READING

One prepared and one impromptu reading were presented at the Taupo Dramatic Society's reading on Wednesday, July 14. The first, "At The Ribbon Counter," by Gert^ rude E. Jennings, was produced by Kay Howie. The cast comprised Audrey Patchett (Miss Hewitt), and Jean Frost (Miss George), as the chatty salesgirls with June Armstrong as the customer in a hurry, whilst Sam Howie provided "voices" off-stage. This play is largely dependent on by-play for success, and is therefore not very suitable for readings, where the cast are hampered by books, but it was handled very well by players whose first experience it was of this type of production. A more experienced cast took the stage for a very capable reading of "The Odd Streak," a short one-act theft mystery. Those taking part were Eunice Birnie, Lois Denize, Di Young and Dulcie Cohen.
