TAUPO'S FIRST MAYOR AND COUNCIL

Taupo achieved the status- of a Borough on October 1st, 1953, having previously been a Town District, and the first Borough Council election was held on Saturday, October 30th, 1953. There was no Mayor - al election, Mr J. E. Story, the Chairman of the Town Board, being the only nominee. Mr Story had served four terms on the Board and had been its Chairman during its last term. Five members of the Town Board stood for the Council and were all elected. They were Miss K. O. Lewis, and Messrs, Swan, Young, Vedder and Morris. In the above Photograph of Taupo's first Mayor and Council the names, reading from left to right, are as follows: — Front row, Cr K. E. Young, Cr K. O. Lewis, His Worship the Mayor, Mr J. E. Story, Cr J. D. Swan, Cr W. G. Morris. Back row, Cr J. M. Stanley, Cr C. S. Currie, Cr J. E. Barton, Cr C. J. Vedder, the Town Clerk, Mr S. Torepe.
