HELP FOR A GOOD CAUSE
WHEN the need arises, in one of those emergencies which from time to time come upon us, for comfort and assistanee to be given to those in danger or distress, there is usually no lack of willing volunteers to answer the call. This is as it should be, and in so far as such emergencies call forth the active and self-sacrificing efforts of its men and women a community can be regarded as being, to that extent, civilised. To be ever ready to help our fellow men in their need better than merely to talk, no matter how eloquently, of humaniideals.
With such sentiments as the fore-going we are all perfectly willing to agree. But unfortunately we are all, to greater or less extent, in our human frailty, no matter how we may fise to the sudden call for help, only too apt to forI get the calls for help that come to us in less spectacular fashion. We are prone to grow weary in welldoing, and if we do not realise that this is so we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. One organisation in our midst that may be regarded as continualI ly reminding us, by its very existence and its works of mercy and
service, of the need not thus to grow weary in well-doing, is the St» John Ambulance Brigade. The members of this Brigade, in their constant readiness to answer the calls for help that come, in season and out, deserve all the help that their fellows can give them. Their work is entirely voluntary, and in the majority of cases is devoid of excitement of sudden catastrophic events. Reports appearing elsewhere in this issue of the "Times" refer not only to recent occasions on which the local Brigade have rendered their usual efficient and ready service, but also to the fact that tomorrow week, Saturday, August 7, has been set aside by the Taupo Rugby Subunion as 'Ambulance Brigade Day.' All football gate takings on that day are to be given to the Brigade, and this opportunity to assist its good work aeserves the^support of all. Those who may not wish to go to the football, but who would like to help the Brigade, are invited to hand donations to members of the Rugby Union Executive, as mentioned elsewhere in this issue. There is no doubt that many will welcome this opportunity to show appreciation for a worthy work.
