GOLF CLUB HONOURS CLUB CAPTAIN
MR K. E. YOUNG ELECTED A LIFE MEMBER - At an extra-ordirtary General Meeting of the Taupo Golf Club, held on Monday evening, July 5, it was unanimously resolved, on the motion of Messrs. A. Graham and L. H. Cheal, that Mr K. E. Young be elected a Life Member. Tracing Mr Young's association with the Club, the President, Mr Cheal, stated that Mr Young had been on the Committee continuously since 1938, and from 1944 had held the office of Club-Captain. This was indeed a unique record in • golfing circles. Mr Young for many years had acted as green-keeper, and had carried out improvements so that today the Club's Links were probably the "finest nine holes in New Zealand,"
Mr Young had long advocated the construction of an extra nine holes, and in 1950 the Club commenced to develop an adjacent area which at that time did not appear as though it could ever be converted into a golf course. Mr Young had supervised all the development work and it was due to j his foresight dnd energy that the members would in the next two or three months have an eighteen hole links. Tributes To Captain Mr J. Woodward, in endorsing Mr Cheal's remarks, stated . that he knew of no officer in any club so deserving of the honour of life membership. Mr A. Graham recalled that prior to 1950 the new nine holes possessed many thousand pine trees, but Mr Young had always remained confident that the area could be converted into golf links.
Mr E. F. Wright said that the faqt that the Club had financed all its improvements from current income and was not forced to go into debt certainly reflected great credit on past Committees and he thought that this alone warranted Mr Young being made a Life Member. Miss Branson mentioned that Mr Young had been on the Committee throughout the war years, and was j one of the few who helped to maintain the qourse with such a/small membership.
Other speakers who expressed similar sentiments were Messrs. G. Marlow, C. Vedder, I. Potts, F. Sherning and L. Stephenson. Mr Young said he wished to thank the members for honouring him in this way, and although he had carried out his duties without thought of personal gain it was very nice to know that one's efforts were appreciated, and he felt sincerely that they had been. The meeting discussed the date of the Annual Ball and it was de- I cided to leave this fixture untill October. It was suggested that the Club consider the cost of laying water on to all its greens. Discussing the adviseability of watering greens, Mr Young stated that members would have to bear in mind that not only would there be the high cost of installation of a satisfactory scheme, but there was also the high cost of operation, as considerable labour was involved in watering greens. v
