FOOTBALL AT TAUPO

WINS FOR UNITED AND MAROA

United had their third successive win on Saturday, June 5, defeating College Old Boys 11 — 9. The forwards dominated the game, though there were sparkling back movements at times. The first score came after fifteen jminutes when G. Blake scored for Old Boys, the kick missing. W. Rickit evened the score with a penalty goal for United. James Biddle then scored for Old Boys, the kick again missing, leaving Old Boys ahead, 6 — 3. Unconverted tries by Lambert and James Biddle, for United and O.B. respectively, retained the latter's lead, 9 — 6. A try for United by George Rameka, converted by W. Rickit made the final score 11 — 9 in United's favour. The second senior game, Tongariro v. Maroa, proved rather disappointing. Maroa were too experienced and fit for their opponents, and won 25 — 3. Scorers for Maroa were N. Gavern, 3 tries; E. Huni 1; T. Rota 1; B. Rangi 1; S. Cole 1; while M. Rangi and D. Paul converted one try each. For Tongariro E. Gracq kicked a penalty goal. Mr R. Lang was referee. Junior Game Taupo Juniors defeated High School 3 — nil in an even game prior to the senior games above. The High Sehool forwards again worked tirelessly but were beaten 11 — 3 in set scrums and 14 — 5 in lineouts. Good tackling by High School backs kept Taupo from scoring until the last minute, when P. Northcroft ran round the blind side of a scrum five yards from High School's line to score a try, which Dance failed to convert. The Taupo team showed better promise than last week and need only a few more games to weld into a solid combination. High School play well but lack backs who can finish off. Position of Teams The competing teams stand at present as follows: — College O.B., played 4, won 3, lost 1, points 5; Taupo played 3, won 2, lost 1, points 4; United played 2, won 2, points 4; Maroa played 4, won 1, lost 3, points 2; Tongariro played 3, lost 3, points nil. The Taupo v. United match tomorrow, Saturday, June 12, promises to be an interesting one, with both teams at present equal. The unbeaten United team are confident, while Taupo expects to field its best team and make the game an open one. A win to United would give them first round equality with Old Boys with another game still in hand. The gate takings on Saturday, June 5, amounted to £15/16/-, which is thought to be a record. The next meeting of the Sub-Union is scheduled for Friday, June 18, at 8 p.m. Queen's Birthday Games The ten-a-side Tournament held at Taupo on Monday, June 7, resulted as follows: — Taupo A 6 v. C.O.B. 0; United 8 v. Taupo B 3; Taupo A 9 v. Maroa 0. Final — Taupo A 14 v. United 3. Losers final — C.O.B. 28 v Taupo B 0.
