FISHING REGULATIONS

PROVISIONS FOR SPECIAL TAUPO WINTER SEASON The experimental winter fishing season in the Taupo Fishery District, June 1 to October 31, both days inclusive, is governed by the Taupo Trout Fishing (Special Season) Regulations 1954, copies of which are now available. The special season does not apply to Lake Roto-a-Ira nor to that portion of the Poutu Stream between that lake and the head of the waterfall in the said stream. Weekly and day licenses only are to be issued, the fees being the same for both district residents and residents of other parts of New Zealand, namely: — Women, girls irrespective of age) and boys under 16, 7/6 for weekly and 3/6 for day licenses; Men and boys of sixteen or over, 10/- for weekly and 3/6 for day licenses. For overseas visitors fees are: — Persons under sixteen 10/- for weekly and 7/6 for day licenses; persons over sixteen, £1 and 7/6 respectively. Every person who has purchased four weekly licenses for the special season shall be entitled to purchase further weekly licenses at a cost of one shilling each, upon surrender of the four weekly licenses previously bought. The daily bag limit for the special season is five fish, and this is a A "catch" limit, that is to say the limit is obtained when the angler catches his fifth fish, whether he decides to kill and keep it or not. "No Fishing-' Areas Regulation No. 12 provides that fishing shall not be permitted during the special season in the following waters: — That portion of the Tongariro River above its junction with the Whitikau Stream; that portion of the Tongariro River which flows through the by-pass that leaves the main stream .at Red Hut Pool and rejoins it at Kowhai Flat, as indicated by signposts.

That portion of the Waiotaka River above the point where the northern boundary of Section 3 Block XI, Puketi Survey District, crosses the river, as indicated by a signpost; that portion of the Waimarino River above the bridge on the Taupo-Turangi Highway; that portion of the Tauranga-taupo River above its junction with the Mangakowhai whiti Stream; that portion of the Waitahanui River above the junction with the Te Arero Stream. Fisinhg is also prohibited during the special season in all rivers and streams entering the Lake from south, west and north between Tokaanu Wharf and Rangatira Point. The foregoing restrictions are additional to those in Regulation 44 of the principal Taupo Trout Fishing Regulations. The special regulations provide that it shall not be unlawful for a person in some other district to be in possession of trout during the close season in that district, provided he proves that the trout had lawfully been taken in the Taupo Fishery District during the experimental season there.
