"BLACK HOLE OF CALCUTTA"
ROBERTS STREET LIGHTING Cr. C. S. Currie brightened proceedings at the Borough Council's meeting on Wednesday, May 5th, when he referred to the lighting of the business section of Roberts Street, between Tongariro Street and Ruapehu Street, and likened the locality to "the Black Hole of Calcutta."
Cr. Currie said he mentioned the matter with diffidence, seeing he was in business in that area, but the position was bad and many shoppers had mentioned the need for improved lighting. The rather high kerb accentuated the need for improvement. The Mayor, Mr J. E. Story, indicated his sympathy with Cr. Currie, remarking that as his premises were in Roberts Street ratepayers would naturally look to him to have an improvement made. However, the matter of an extra light in the area was already in hand. Mr J. M. Sherwood, the Council's electrical inspector, who was in attendance, stated that the new light would be installed as soon as possible.
