CRICKET NOTES

TAUPO CLUB BEATS SCHOOL In order to play one further match between the Taupo School and the Taupo Cricket Club before the school broke up for the May holidays a wicket was cut on the Aerodrome on the week-end of May 3. Although the match provided a most enjoyable afternoon's cricket the vagaries of th,e wicket was not a very good test for the school - boys who had little chance to follow the antics that the ball got up to after it had pitched. Mr Hoggard and Mr Sherwood opened the battipg for the school ! and for some time runs came only in singles. When the score had reached 37 without loss Mr Hoggard was stumped by Frank McKean off his father's bowling and shortly after that J. Smith who had not bowled very well earlier, returned to the, crease^ Bowling this time from the opposite end, he immediately caused a collapse with the result that the whole school side was out for 9 more runs;

Taupo Club lost two early wickets but Kennedy and Frank McKean added 21 for the third wicket and later Forster and Sam McKean carried the total within four of their opponents. The Club eventually gained a lead of ten runs. Some excellent catches were held by Perceval, West and Dixon; the first named holding a full blooded drive from J. Smith. It was decided to divide the remainder of the time and the School had put 32 on the board for the loss of 4 widkets when there was still five minutes to go. Then came a sensational over from Denis Chapman who took four wickets for 2 runs including the hat-trick. The last wicket fell to the last ball but one of the final over of the innings. Sam McKean bowled splendidly to take 3 wickets for 9 runs. The Club was set 28 runs to win and their openers, Forster and Acres obtained these without loss, and continuing to bat the team finished with a total of 57.
