CRICKET NOTES

TIHOI BEATEN Tihoi visited Taupo on March 28 to play the first match between these teams for nearly two years. The home team batted first, Sherwood and Kennedy opening against the bowling of Beckett and Dick. Sherwood took the initiative and when out for a bright 27 the partnership had laid a good foundation for a score. Kennedy left next over and Sutherland and Acres added 64 for the third wicket and were then dismissed in successive overs. Woodward played one of his best innings of the season whilst Harding ran quickly into double figures and was not out. In bowling 17 overs Frank Beckett bore the brunt of the Tihoi attack, but G. Lynne was treated with the greatest respect, his eight overs bringing him four wickets for twelve. Forster and Neame opened the Taupo bowling against Parore and Dick who both defended stoutly. After an early success against the latter, Neame bowled without luck and it was Forster who broke the second wicket partnership when Frank Beckett skied the ball to be held by Sherwood. Parore continued steadily, but the only support he received was from Burgess who hit gamely.to reach double figures. Kennedy who eventually caught and bowled him finished with the best bowling figures. The end of the visitors innings came with the score at 77 when they required one run only to save a follow-on. In their second knock Tihoi opened with Beckett who in an hour scored 95 out of a total of 126. His innings provided the fastest sustained scoring effort of the season.
