TAUPO v. PUBLIC SCHOOLS

The Taupo Cricket Club enjoyed a creditable victory over the English Public Schools Association (Waikato) at Taupo on March 20. The visitors batted first and the opening pair, Davey and Acres put on 73 for the first wicket. The steadiness of the attack of Sam McKean and Gordon Sutherland then slowed scoring and four wickets f-ell quickly for fourteen runs. Hampton and Milton then took the scorg along in a partnership that realised 38 runs. The innings ended for 133 when Milton was bowled by a vicious break from Sam McKean. Sherwood and Kennedy opened for Taupo, the former being missed in the slips off the second ball. Parker had Kennedy lbw in his third over but two overs later was severety punijshed by Sutherland who took 18 runs off the eight balls. Forster, Sam McKean and Frank McKean all assisted Sutherland to , push the score along. When the latter's score had reached 68 with a fine hit for six over mid-wicket he was told that four were required for a first innings lead and overreached himself trying to hit a widish off ball from Riddiford and skied it for Davey to take a good catch. Frank McKean and Jack Smith took the total well past their opponents, but after tea Mansergh's wily slows brought about the downfall of the tail-enders and the* innings closed for 175. Batting again with a reversed batting order, the visitors lost five wickets for 38, Woodward and Frank McKean both bowling well. ENGLISH PUBLIC SCHOOLS First Innings G. A. Acres run out 24 W. H. K.
