W.I. GARDENING CIRCLE

Members of the Women's Institute Gardening Circle spent another -very interesting afternoon last week, meeting this time at the home of Mr and Mrs E. F. Wright, Mere Road. The time passed all too quickly as seeds were exchanged and different aspects of gardening discussed. Following afternoon tea members enjoyed a walk round Mrs Wright's garden, their hostess kindly giving cuttings and plants to different members. During the discussion members were urged to prepare for spring and summer growing of vegetables, for there was no doubt that with the growth of building in many districts taking up land formerly devoted to vegetable production, and for other reasons, vegetables were likely to be in short supply. A display of summer flowering chrysanthemums, and also the new Charm dahlias, grown by a member, were much admired. The former have the valuable advantage, for Taupo, that buds are not so likely to be damaged by frosts as is the case with the older autumn flowering chrysanthemums. Mr G. F. Colbeck has very kindly donated £1/5/- to the Institute as a prize for the most points in the Cut Flower and Decorative Section at the Institute's next show. Hyacinth bulbs were distributed amongst members for a competition in the Spring. All members were grateful to Mrs Wright for the trouble she had taken to make the gathering a success.
