DAMAGE TO CAR
COUNCIL DENIES LIABILITY A letter that was before the Borough Council meeting on Wednesday, February 17, stated that it seemed that the Council was responsible for damage sustained by a motor-car on December 12 last, and enquired whether or not the Council admitted liability. The letter was from the Australian Alliance Assurance Company, Wellington. It said that on the date mentioned a client's Chevrolet car drew into the side of the Lake
front road, at a point near the Ruapehu Street intersection, and that the ground apparently subsided precipitating the car down a sixteen foot drop. The Company stated that their client's vehiclel was extensively damaged and that it was estimated that repairs, including salvage, would approximate £150. The letter alleged that the ground had been built up by filling but there were no warning notices of the haza-rd which apparently existed. On the motion of the Mayor, Mr J. E. Story, seconded by Cr. K. O. Lewis, the Council instructed the Town Clerk to reply stating that the Council would admit no liability whatever.
