WAIKATO RIVER DAM, TAUPO
A view of the Waikato River dam and control gates at Taupo, as seen looking upstream. The installation plays an important part in the operation of the State Hydro-Electric Departm^nt's power stations on the River, its six control gates enabling the flow from the Lake to be regulated as may be desired. They are operated by individual winches, each powered by an electric motor, in accordance with daily instructions received from Departmental headquarters in Hamilton by Mr W. Marrett, Control Gates overseer. The Damcarries the main Taupo highway to the north. The fenced enclosure in right middle distance is the Hydro-Electric Department's meteorologieal station, and behind it are the buildings of Huka Timbermills Ltd. Left of the dam is the residence of Mr A. C. L. Fooks Wairakei Geo-Thermal Power Project engineer. , Behind it appear the buildings of the Project's single men's camp, situated between the highway and the Municipal Motor Camp.
