SEALING THE TOWN ROADS

Sir, — The Borough Council's proposed road sealing programme as reported in your issue of February 26th appears sound enough as regards the choice of key roads. There is, however, one exception. Why, might one ask, has Waipahihi Avenue been included? A glance at a map makes it clear that the remainder of the roads in the programme have been chosen because they give access to all parts of Taupo and to numerous other roads within the borough. Each of the chosen roads will also be conveniently linked to one another thus ensuring that motorists and pedestrians will enjoy a dustfree trip to ahd from the shopping eentre. Waipahihi Avenue, however, is not connected to these roads, is used by very few persons. There are, I believe, about eight or nine residences there. It is a "Dead End" road. This latter point may be rectified at a later date under the town planning scheme, but even if this be so it does not justify the sealing of a few chains in this remote , locality at such an early stage. I note that the report states (proposes) that Rifle Range Road will be sealed from Taharepa Road to the Lake Front. Might I suggest that the loan money would be better spent of instead of sealing Waipahihi Avenue it were used to seal the remainder of Rifle Range Road from Taharepa Road to the Golf Links Road? True, this means the sealing of approximately 18 chains as compared to approximately 10 chains on Waipahihi Avenue. but when one considers the extreme grade of the latter and the consequent increase in cost of sealing as a result, plus the removal of equipment to what is to all intents and purposes another operation it will be seen that there will be very little difference in the price of sealing of either section. It may be that I have overlooked various factors regarding the decision of the council in their selection of Waipahihi Avenue for sealing. If so I have a ready ear if they (the council) deem fit to enlighten me, through your columns, regarding same. I am, etc.,
